I visited my facebook business page this morning and found the announcement of a new design coming soon: New Facebook Pages – On 30 March 2012, all Facebook Pages will get a new design. Preview your page now to see what it looks like and try out the new features.
You may be familiar with Timeline on your facebook profile (your personal page is a profile, your business page is a ‘page’ in facebook speak). Some of the cover images that people have developed for their personal profiles are breathtaking!
Now you will have the same layout for your business page and so you should be thinking about a cover image that suits you and your fans.
What should I use as a cover photo
A cover photo is a good way of getting your unique message across using the wider space available in the banner at the top of the page.
I created a new cover photo this morning to also feature some of the websites I have worked on recently. It took a couple of false starts as there are no obvious hints as to what the size of the image should be.
A bit of research (and my final result) has an optimum canvas size of 850px x 315px. If you are creating an image or logo from scratch or compilation then I suggest starting with a canvas of this size and then just adding and rearranging your work in the space you have.
Make sure you leave some space at the bottom left as there is overlap with your profile picture.
There are some restrictions on cover photos around copyright and blatant commercialism and advertising so don’t sell space on your cover image.
I’d suggest you use the time between now and March 30th to perfect your new look while you can do this behind the scenes. On the 30th of March, 2012 your page will convert and show a default timeline that may not show you off as well as one you have looked at in advance.
